Some simple base rules for becoming known and for bringing more readers to your blog, they’re quite simple stuff but beginners should not pass them. More experienced ones, if you'd like to add more, please, feel free to do this. :)

Good, unique content is a must. Create your own style of writing and try not to lower the quality of your information. Also, re-read your posts and where it can be done, correct its when you see grammar errors, poor quality posts means less “loyal” readers.
Buy an own domain, forget about subdomains like blogspot and others.
Be careful with your blog design and layout, my 2 cents: simple is better.
Not a step without joining comunities like StumbleUpon, MyBlogLog, Youtube etc.
Posting tips more often will bring visitors to your blog. Do not forget to include numbers in your posts, something like “5 tips for remaining pregnant”, “10 ways to destroy a Lamborghini” and so on.
“Subscribe via RSS” should not miss, it’s a good way to let your visitors know when you write something new. You should also allow your readers to review your posts, using ReviewMe.
Social networking is a must, so join this communities also, start creating a “friends area” and share with them what you write. Forums are also a good way to add traffic to the blog.
Answering to comments and emails from your visitors must also be put on “to do list”, this way they’ll know you are always in touch with them. Also start asking questions like “do you like the change? “ “what should I improve to design, is it to coloured etc?” etc.
Watch what words bring you more traffic and write posts with those keywords often.
Visit others’ blogs, leave comments and do not forget to sign with your blog. Be careful not to become to pushy!
Search for blog top lists. The more you sign in your blog, the higher number of visitors should be. Also submit the blog to search engines.
Use link exchange with other blogs, not necessarily in the same niche, but could be better to be related to what you write.
From time to time try to write “instructional” posts – a.k.a. tutorials. Do not hurry, make your homeworks before starting it and give your best. Link to it as “informative post” or “popular articles” and , if it worths, this will get links to it, increasing your popularity.
Be up-to-date to celebrity news and when something is interesting, write about it. For example, when Lady Gaga appeared to have a penis on the stage, in the next 10 minutes you should already create a post about this. If you do not like my example, choose another. J Same with Holidays, they are good ways to improve your ratings.
When you start to have a good decent traffic, from time to time throw into stage a contest. Contest news spread fast among bloggers, known and unknown. Prize can be something original, not necessarily expensive.
Can you handle more blogs? If yes, create more than one and popularize its by linking between them.
Do not start your blog with hunger for money, be patient, don’t start throwing at visitors eyes with banners, Google ads etc from the beginning. Money will come, if you deserve, later. :)

Start writing some press releases. Visit prleap.com, prfree.com etc.
Be inventive, write reviews on different products, create some plugins, be original. That’s the best way to head for the top.
