We see paint everywhere we go; from our homes, schools, and shopping malls. It plays an important role in renovation. If one cannot afford renovation by other means, painting is the cheapest way to do so. This style of decorating can be done by professionals and even by us. There are a wide variety of paints to choose from; lots of color schemes are available. The sheen of the paint should also be considered. What are paints? These are nothing but a combination of solvents, resins, pigments and other additives. The solvent in paint can either be water or mineral spirits, the more the solvent the cheaper. Paints with high amounts of solvent are not good; they reduce the effect of the pigments and resins present in it. Pigments and resins give the paint its characteristic color.

Paints can be latex or oil based (alkyd). Latex paints are water-based but contrary to what the name suggests do not contain latex. These are eco-friendly and stains can be washed by soap. Alkyd paints or oil based paints are mineral spirit based paints; these give off large amount volatile organic compound, which make them hazardous material. Hence for environmental and other reasons nowadays latex paints are considered equal or even better than alkyd paints.

The sheen of the paint should also be considered when making a selection. There are three types of paint sheen that are available; flat, semi-gloss, gloss. Flat as the name suggest has the minimum amount of sheen. They are able to conceal flaws. These are the ones most used on walls and ceilings. Semi-gloss sheen is used in kitchens and bathrooms. Gloss paints are usually applied only to any woodwork surface. Therefore painting has many facets to it; one has to consider the surface, the kind and choice of paint and the paint sheet.
