Choosing SMF for a forum ( free CMS )
Choosing SMF for a forum ( free CMS )
Since there are no new posts in this section, I thought I can share a bit of my experience using SMF as a forum software. We are talking about open source software, so SMF is really ok if you are trying to get out as cheap as possible or if you are doing this just for the fun of it.
It has lots of useful plugins so if you would like to add SEF URLs that is really easy. Also, there are available many free themes for SMF forum software, so you do not have to worry that you will not find something to match with your site. You can afterwards customize it a bit and you have something special with really now costs.
But, as I said, this is just for the fun. SMF has down sides also. It creates really huges DB even if it does not have that many posts/topics, the members section is quite difficult to customize and you definetely need a plugin for members registration, to get rid to some of the spammy members registration.

I think SMF is okay but one thing I cannot stand about SMF is the fact that you are not allowed to remove their link. I used it briefly for my online dating forum but I really got cheesed off because I had to leave about two silly link that links to nothing relevant to the contents of my site.
Some people said its quite good but I also had serious problmes with spam. I don't think I can use any forum software apart from vB.

SMF is the only free forum I would even consider using.
As for the tiny links at the bottom, what's the big deal? They are clear at the bottom and text-only. Most other free software requires a lot more than that.

SMF is good but I consider MyBB more secure and stable.
