Mamp;S has become the first major retailer to use only Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper for all of its till rolls, helping protect the worldâ??s forests with each receipt printed. The new receipts are also lighter than the traditional kind and will use 8% less pulp. This will help save over 800 trees per year â?? or enough paper to stretch from Lands End to John Oâ?? Groats seven times.Made from FSC certified paper, the new receipts were launched in all Mamp;S stores across the UK this week. The new till rolls are manufactured in the UK and delivered to stores in environmentally friendly boxes made from recycled board.Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they contain wood or pulp from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. The move to FSC certified paper is part of Mamp;Sâ?? ongoing Plan A commitment to ensure that key raw materials come from the most sustainable sources available, and extends the retailerâ??s already significant commitment to FSC.All Mamp;S tissues, kitchen and toilet rolls, sandwich cardboard packs, the Your Mamp;S magazine, and over 3 million Christmas cards are manufactured using FSC certified pulp or recycled wood. Most of the wood used in Mamp;Sâ?? garden furniture ranges is also FSC certified and the photocopier paper used in Mamp;S stores and offices contains 80% recycled wood pulp.Richard Gillies, Director of Plan A at Marks amp; Spencer said: â??Till roll might not seem that important but it actually uses up a surprising amount of paper so this is a real step forward. Weâ??re really pleased to be extending our relationship with the FSC. Responsible management of forests is such an important issue and one that our customers really care about.â??Charles Thwaites, Executive Director of FSC UK added: â??FSC relies very heavily on progressive companies like Mamp;S to take the trouble to identify new opportunities to use FSC-certified materials wherever they are practical. Till roll paper is a fine example of a use that may initially appear undramatic, but which actually has a greater beneficial impact on the worldâ??s forest than many people would first think. What is more, where Mamp;S treads today, others will follow tomorrow.â??
