how many characters in title required for Search Engine Optimization?

There is no specific number of characters that should be used, but a suggested amount is between 50 to 60 characters or approximately 10 words.

There is a max that the various SE will dispaly in the results - longer than this and you will get ... It is around 50 - 60 as Hasof says

some directory sites limit the title to 50 characters....
