Default Google's algorithm update: Codename "Caffeine"

Last summer, Matt Cutts, software engineer at Google, introduced us to a preview of the new Google update, named "Caffeine". Since then, Google seriously got into real-time search, including real-time tweets, Facebook and MySpace streams into their search results. But beside that, under the hood they are developing a brand new search indexing algorithm, that’s been tested since last summer on one of their datacenter, and is expected to be up-and-ready across all of Google.

Named "Caffeine", the update will boost the search engine to a new level, focused on speed, freshness and efficiency. All this change has started discussions on the SEO world, considering the fact that this will also affect current rankings for SERPs. This is both good news, and bad news: the bad news is that some sites will lose their top position; the good news is that other sites, providing good, quality and relevant content, will get higher rankings, and thus provide a better user-experience.

A study made last year by a SEO company, noticed that for generic keywords the new "Caffeine" algorithm gives higher importance to news and social media results, while for specific search terms you will get results from niche websites. So all the rumors about the importance of social media being low, will now be gone.
Link popularity will still have its weight. "Caffeine" is not aimed to change off-page optimization, but the on-page optimization will make the difference. In order to get the best out of link building, the links must be directed to pages with very good on-page SEO done, so that they will load faster, have clear coding, and have a high percentage of unique, quality, relevant content.

Understanding this change, and why your rankings and your competitors will change in the following period, is the first step to ensure that you will use this big chance Google is offering along with this update.
"Caffeine" is supposed to be the biggest and most fundamental change to Google’s algorithm, since its “Big Daddy” update in 2005.
