It all started on Christmas Eve, when Facebook challenged Google’s first place in most visited websites. This continued on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and two weeks ago.

Hitwise’s research director Heather Dougherty explained in a recent blog post: “the market share of visits to Facebook.com increased 185% last week as compared to the same week in 2009, while visits to Google.com increased 9% during the same time frame.”

According to Hitwise’s data, Facebook dethroned Google in terms of visits from March 7 until March 13. While Google had 7.03% of all web traffic, the social networking website reached a 7.07%, leaving the search engine somewhere behind in the dust.

Heather Dougherty added that Facebook and Google’s visitors from US represent 14% of all US people that use the Internet regularly.

This latest news can mean only good things for the social network, in terms of advertising revenues and investors. More than that, a users’ interest boost might arise while people are always delighted for becoming a part of something so popular.
