There is different ways webmaster used to get on top of Google page, share the tip and techniques you are using with other people.Below are some of the tips that can help you get to the first page in Google:

• Natural Growth Of Backlinks
• Put your keyword in the first 90 characters
• Repeat your keyword every 7-10 lines of text
• Put your keyword as the filename of your image

While on page optimization is important, link building is what is really going to put you over the edge. The balance is really 20/80, 20% on page, 80% off page. Make sure you are spending your time building those links.

Where are you getting those stats? I've seen rankings that appear to be contrary to the above.

My tips would be:

- Get lots of valid backlinks targetting your keyword
- Dont sutff your pages with a certain keyword
- Dont forget to put the keyword in the alt and title tags
- Dont overuse keywords in H1 H2 H3 tags etc
- Dont go for 1 word keywords
- Try pick at max like 3 keywords strings per page to optimize for if you have enough time that is hehe
- Find related keywords to your main keywords and gradually put those in your page too
- Update often with good new content because if you dont update all other efforts are like useless time wasters

i think link building also help specially on forums and from free advertising forum... because, you can use your keywords as your anchor text they can rank high... and also putting some alt tags when doing image optimization... :D
