    Default Website resolution - what to choose

    Website resolution - what to choose

    When you create your website concept in image ( PSD and export in JPG ) you need to know the basic dimension for which you`ll adapt the CSS. So, you have to be sure on the screen size you`ll use, else you may end up with users beeing unable to see your site correctly.

    The best way, in this case, is to see which are the most two popular ones that can adapt to other screen resolutions.

    My recommendations would be :

    1024x768 and 800x600
    And you can add a script that, according to users resolution, load one of the two styles, if that is possible.

    note : this post was created because not all sites work with fluid layouts

    Why not create it properly so it's a % width of the screen. If your going to all the trouble of creating a website from scratch design it and make it stretchable. It's not that hard and looks a lot better. The only time you should need an alternate skin is for mobile devices like iphones. Some people have a spider skin which is basically a skin without any gfx, javascript or css as this speed's up a bot/spider crawl and reduces server load but you definately don't need multiple skins for different screen widths.

    Yeah 960px @ a res of 72.
    Be sure to center the site in css for wide screen users.

    #wrapper{width960px; margin:0 auto;}

    good choice, I choose anything between 930 and 970 px so it will fit on 1024 screens

    you don't want to lose those visitors using 1024, nor you want them to have to scroll horizontally

    I don't support 800x600 anymore, it just doesn't make sense in my opinion

    I also do this. 960px works in most resolutions but not all. However it's the most common for website width. Can't go wrong with 960px.

    I also use 960px width, seems to be the best.

    Problem now seems to be a lot of sites with big resolutions but also a lot of smaller resolutions because of the increase in netbooks. I think 960px provides a balanced middle point.

    I think 960px is standard.
