HowTo: Classic Link Exchange, 3-way, and Diamond Link Exchange
Link popularity is considered to be the best way of getting good SERP. It helps your site rank well for certain keywords you use in the link-exchange process, and so get a higher position of your website on the search engine results. But sometimes, a bad link exchange technique could get your site banned or even dropped from Google.
Classic Link Exchange, 3-way, and Diamond Link Exchange
The classic link exchange theory is simple: I post a link to you from my site A, and you post a link to me from your website B.
Because the value transmitted by reciprocal links is low, some webmasters try 3-way linking schemes, in which the site A links to the site B, and the site B links to the site C, where both A and C websites belong to the same person/company. Or, in other cases, webmasters try diamond, or 4-way link exchange, which involves 2 sites on each side, and can be done in two ways: a simple double link exchange (A -> B, C -> D and B -> A, D -> C) or a double 3-way exchange (A -> B, B -> C, C -> D, D -> A), where sites AC belong to a person, and BD belong to another.
The advantage of including 3 or more websites in the link exchange process is that they all use one-way links, not reciprocal, so they transmit maximum value. It’s recommended that the websites A and C (which belong to the same person) to be hosted on different servers, with different IP classes, or Google will almost consider them as normal link-exchange.
Here is an example with the 3 types of link exchange:
