What is the point of link exchange?

The point is that you increase your search engine ranking and your traffic if you do link exchange with the correct partner

Exchanging links with other sites related to your site's theme is really beneficial to your site. It can help your site to increase its link popularity, search engine rankings as well as giving decent traffic....

Some people say link exchange are pointless these days, but I would disagree and as long as the link are from and to relevant pages then they are fine. This is what Temi means by 'correct partner'. Don't do a link exchange to a page from your site about 'The Web' to a page about 'Casinos'

I think reciprocal links are extremely low value these days, but judging from the posts I've seen so far here, most of the people are more geared towards 3-way link exchanges which is just as beneficial as purchasing a one way link providing all 3 sites are not linked together.
