This is too general. Paid or unpaid internships depends on the field you are looking an internship in.

This depends on the type of company and their ethics within the fields you are an intern.

An internship in the UK is designed to set you up with a wide range of experience, and from a future employer perspective show that you went out on your own to learn and that you were looking for more than just a pay check but also some valuable work experience to help you with your future career.

I do agree with "An internship in the UK is designed to set you up with a wide range of experience". Apart from that: Who made you believe this? This is nonsense. Just because you went out to the UK for an internship doesn't mean you gain what you want to learn as an intern. Internship is about quality over quantity. And internship-uk.com is one of the companies that doesn't know what quality is!
Whether you look for an internship in UK, France, US, Spain, Hollande, Germany or wherever, the aim of an internship is... and I have a few definitions of 'internship' for you:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internship
An intern or stagiaire is one who works in a temporary position with an emphasis on on-the-job training rather than merely employment, making it similar to an apprenticeship.
Internships provide the employers with cheap or free labor for (typically) low-level tasks (stereotypically including fetching coffee for the office), and also the prospect of interns' returning to the company after completing their education and requiring little or no training. (
is this really what you want during an internship? To be considered cheap/free labor?)

a student who works (often without pay) in order to gain experience in their chosen field

INTERNSHIPS: Short-term, supervised work experience, usually related to a student’s major, for which the student earns credit. The work can be full or part-time, on or off campus, paid or unpaid

Internship – A temporary work program in which a student can gain supervised practical experience in a particular professional field.

Internships—Practical work or training experience that allows students to apply what they have learned in class. Generally, you'll participate in an internship when you are not taking classes—perhaps during the summer.
Now imagine you are a student: which definition would you choose?
