What should I read to learn about search engines
Matt Cutts responded a question: “What resources (textbooks, online PDFs etc) would you recommend to people interested in learning more about LSI, search engine algorithms, etc?”
The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine by Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Cutts also recommended some textbooks: “One is Modern Information Retrieval”. Nowadays there are a lot of papers about Google that we’ve published. You don’t need to read all these pages. But if you want to know more about the biggest search engine, you have to read the most authoritative publications.

Search engines do not evaluate your site on how pretty it is, but they do evaluate the words and put them through a sifter, giving credit to certain words and combinations of words. Words found within your document are compared to words found within your links and titles. The more that match, the better your "score."
