I got involved in the press release submission process before, and i would like to say that press release specially the ones that will be reviewed for free are hard to get released unless they offer something interesting and new, so it differs from product to product, and with no guarantee.

If you have something that is newsworthy then send it out on a proper press release wire. In the UK a reasonable one that is search engine friendly is Sourcewire.
