Default HowTo: On-Page vs Off-Page optimization

I saw many questions regarding on-page and off-page SEO. Many webmasters don't have a clear difference between them, so here it is:

The point of On-Page SEO is to optimize you website and pages. This includes a good keyword density within your articles, important meta tags, title tags (for links), alt attribute (for images), the usage of heading tags for the important titles (H1, H2 and H3), and the existence of the sitemap, and robots.txt.

After you have done good on-page SEO, you can start doing Off-Page SEO. This means link popularity, for a good keyword optimization. You can get relevant quality backlinks from social bookmarking websites, microblogging platforms, forum posting and signatures, blog comments and web directories.

James, web directories are like Yellow Pages. They provide a list with websites, sorted by category. They are good for SEO, if you submit the sites to the right category, and are also good because many users look in web directories for things they need. But you must be careful to choose the best directories. You can read one of my older posts with tips that make a good directory.

Forum posting on relevant forums/topics is far better than directory submissions, from my point of view.

Why more? It's just easier to post on forum than submitting to directories

on-page optimization helps your site to be crawled by search engines faster so that your website will be indexed not only the home page but also the inner pages of your website...

    and

off-page optimization also helps but not the same thing as on-page, it's job is to increase your page ranking and also site's visitors...

On-page optimisation (on-page SEO) is what can be done on the pages of a website to maximise its performance in the search engines for target keywords related to the on-page content.
Off-page optimisation (off-page SEO) is what can be done off the pages of a website to maximise its performance in the search engines for target keywords related to the on-page content and keywords in off-page direct-links.
