In today scenario search engines are being more sensible to give the best information to their users and for this they give priority to a website which has informative, interesting and unique content.

Onpage is also a good part of seo, but over optimization is also treated as spam by search engines.

Besides this video optimization, squidoo lense, hub page creation and SMO is really working great in current scenario.

Nowadays article directories are not a good way to promote website. Yes you can get a traffic from them, but it is difficult, because not many people searching an information on such directories.

Except this profile linking, citation submission and press release submission are the good way to get quality of backlinks.
