difference between SEM and SEO?
Search Engine Optimization is an activity which is part of Search Engine Marketing strategy. Simply put, to carry out all-inclusive and effective Search Engine Marketing one needs to optimize a site on the lines of a Search Engine which sums-up one aspect of Search Engine Marketing

SEM takes it a step farther to include using paid search engine listings and paid inclusion to get more traffic to your websites.

Well, I always prefer SEO for the site. Because it is free and easy way to promote my site. It's both of techniques Off and On page are user friendly, and i can easily achieve my goal.Where as SEM is paid techniques so I never use it. It is also good technique but paid..

Hi Friends
SEM refers to Search Engine Marketing. This is the general overall broad term used to describe any form of web traffic coming to your site from the search engines. Or web marketing via the search engines. How these are broken down is through free organic traffic from search engines and also paid traffic from the search engines commonly by way of PPC.
SEO refers to Search Engine Optimization. Here there are two key elements which are On page SEO and Off page SEO. This can also be referred to as on site SEO and off site SEO.

SEM stands for "search engine marketing" and SEO stands for "search engine optimization."
SEM is the all-encompassing broad phrase that includes SEO as well as paid search activities such as Google AdWords purchases.
SEO, on the other hand, is simply a subset of SEM.
Some people mistakenly think that SEM = PPC while SEO = organic. SEO does equal organic, but as you can see by the definition above, SEM does not equal JUST paid search.
