Webring - A Good Way To Link To Other Sites
Webring is quite a good way to get linked to sites which have a similar theme to yours. So, for example, if you have a site on camping, you would be in a ring with that theme.
If you have a site with lots of pages on different topics, you can put a code on several pages, and then join several rings.

Just add a code to your page you want to feature, and the page is then in a `ring` of sites. An unusual way to gain backlinks, and there are ways to get your site featured to get it even more noticed.

I am not sure that is right, its against most search engine TOS join web rings etc and you can easily get penalised if search engines point their banning crawler to a ring.

I wouldn`t like to say either way. Judging by the number of sites who use it though it looks very popular.
It isn`t a form of purchasing links, as it is completely free to join, and use.
I`ve also done PR checks on a few, and it doesn`t look like they`re in the big `G`s black book.
Welcome! You've just entered WebRing, a pioneer in social networking. Since 1994, our members have created over 40,000 communities visited by three million people a month. What can you do with WebRing?

Interesting topic! I thought I`d check Wikipedia on Webring, and apparently Yahoo owned it way back following an aquisition.
I have to say I couldn`t find anything there to suggest sites joining a ring could be looked down on by Google. But, one never knows., and eighteen months after the acquisition, on September 5, 2000, Yahoo! unveiled a fully-overhauled WebRing, known as Yahoo! WebRing.

But when you visit link exchange sites, nothing says Google look down on link exchange either...... but when you read Google terms and condition or whatever its called, it goes something like do not participate in scheme designed to manipulate you links (or something like that) this has been interpreted to include link exchange, sponsoring templates, web ring etc etc.

I think you`re probably right, Temi.
I suspect that Google might downvalue certain sites, or pages within the site, if too may links are going out bound from a Webring placed on a page. And of course some could be to low quality sites which you have no control over.
I imagine the real winners are the ringmasters themselves who control the rings.
