Well, you're right. Choosing the most appropriate keywords for your site's web pages is very important and it plays a huge role in SEO especially in your site's rankings in SERPs.

When I'm researching for keywords for my personal blog, I consider their competitiveness and average searched volume. :) I'm using Google Adwords as my keyword tool. :)

Usually i used google keyword external, wordtracker and google.com/sktool tools for keyword research.

There are huge number of research tool but Google adwards tool is one of the best tool to research good most appropriate keyword for your site.

Most of the time I am using google keyword tool and google search based tool for my keyword research activities.. I usually looked into keyword demands, trends, and competitions.. And I am using this figure 10-5-1 where demand should be 10, with an average trend (5), and less competition (1). So if the competition is about 10000 (this are surely competing sites) I'll see to it that the demand is 10 times than the competition value that's 100000.. After that, I then consider the keyword trend.. Once a keyword passes all of these notations I set for myself, I then include the keyword to my list of keywords to optimize for my site..

I am using Keyword Elite along with google adwords keyword tool. KE is a nice tool..Worth its price.
