There various ways of gaining backlinks, one of the ways is internal linking within your webpages, choosing the right anchor text that is related with the content or information found in the specific web page of the site.
The inbound links boost both the page itself and help the site receive an additional link popularity boost overall.
Proper Internal Linking can help the site gets properly spider visit ,build the relevancy of a page to a keyword phrase and increase the PR of the internal page.

Yes internal linking is extremely important IMO although i should really take my own advise as most of my sites are lacking the internal linking they deserve.

i think those are deep link submission like in directories (that accept deep link submission), social bookmarking :D

I would say its making sure that all of your pages on your site are linked with relevant anchor text , for example : You have a webmaster blog , you write an article about SEO and you have a category about SEO , every time SEO is mentioned in the Article you would hyperlink it to the category .

Most large sites do this and is a great way of spreading PR which will eventually lead to better indexing and avoid the omitted results.

nice information hafsoh and yes, you're right! internal linking is a good idea especially in google because google considers each page different from each other.
