In March 2006, Seth Godin, an American author and popular speaker, launched Squidoo, a community website allowing users to create pages, or lenses, for subjects of interest.

A percentage of all Squidoo`s profits go to charities, and to the page creators, or Lensmasters.

A lens is just another name for a web page that focuses, like a camera lens, on a particular topic people are really interested in. Lenses can be on virtually any subject, from health problems, diets, affiliate marketing, camping to zoology.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of pages, or lenses.

Here are some of the features and benefits of owning a lens, or indeed many lenses-some lensmasters have hundreds of lenses.

Lenses are free to set up.

Lenses are easy and totally non-technical.

Lenses pay a royalty to hundreds of great charities, or straight to the lensmaster.

Lenses get you credibility and traffic, and lenses only take a few minutes to build.

A lens isn`t instead of your website. Build a lens to help your website.

Links are `do-follow` so you get some backlinks to your site, or blog.

You can build a lens about your hobby, your charity, your work, your career, your favorite websites. Squidoo.com is one of the powerful and fast growing Web 2.0 sites available free for web publishers and marketers to make money online.

If you have an online business you can promote your affiliate products, business website or anything else you like to promote on your lenses.

To be effective your lens has to be such that it attracts traffic constantly. Visitors will read your content and will also hopefully click on your affiliate links or business website, without you having to spend a cent.

Add Modules
You can upload Youtube videos, Flickr images, eBay, Amazon modules and many many more.

Tag Your Lens
When you build your new lens, Squidoo lets you add a title and suggest some keywords. Those are actually your tags. The beauty is that Squidoo actually suggest what it considers to be tags relevant to your topic. Or you may add some of your own.

Use Images
Too much text gets boring. By placing images and photos to your lens. The images you use must be interesting and have a relation to your content. This way you will make your lens different, individualizing it.

SquidU is their discussion forum. There`s a wealth of useful information on the forum. Ask questions, ask for help, show off your lens(es), ask for reviews, anything!

Promote your lens by Lensrolling it -a Digg-type site for squidoo lenses, http://www.lensroll.com/

Make good use of squidoo tutorials, there's an excellent one on basic squidoo html, and one on advanced squidoo html, so you can add bold, images, links and so on.

Favorite others lenses if they stand out, and some lensmasters will do the same for you.

There`s a rating system, so you can rate from 1 to 5 stars, depending on how good, and well put together, someone`s lens is. The more high ratings, the better.

Join `Groups` which follow a similar theme to your lens. A group may consist of just a few lenses, to thousands. There are some really big groups, and you are encouraged to join as many groups as appropriate. Some groups follow a theme, others just aim to be the biggest, and will accept virtually any lens.

Join the Fanclub of another lensmaster. Others will become your fans too.

All the above help to get you seen, to get you noticed, to get you visitors.

But, the bottom line is, that just like any worthwhile website, content is king. Add to it, remove out-of-date material, use modules, and you`ll have a lens, or lenses, which will bring you many visitors, make you some money through the Squidoo program, and help spread the word about whatever it is you want to talk about.

I have no doubt that there are some who do make money. But, I reckon they must have a lot of lenses and work very hard on them to make a decent income from them.

Adsense is placed on the pages (or lenses) by Squidoo. Members earn a small income from the overall revenues brought in through Adsense.
