The ultimate guide to earning money from proxy sites
Many people view proxies as simply a hype that has now died down, but that is most definitely not the case. While proxies were over-hyped in the webmaster community, labeled as a super fast and easy way to make money, they are definitely still worth considering if you want to create a successful site. It is very hard, near impossible to get a site earning money fast and do not expect this guide to help you do so. What it will do, is show you the easiest ways to make a decent turnover on a proxy.
Firstly, one of the most important things to note is who your target audience is. Proxies are generally used by people who want to access restricted material in school or at the workplace. This means you need to tailor your proxy to this. These institutions know about proxies and most ban anything that has the word “proxy” in the domain. So, the first rule of thumb is to never make a domain that has that word in it, or you’ll find you could be banned before you even start!
Another great way to avoid detection is to create a landing page or even build a site around the proxy. By masking the proxy as an educational resource, for example, the chances that the site will be flagged as a proxy by any automated system are very low.
Secondly, it’s always best to use free proxy software. Software such as phproxy works just as well as any paid proxy and allows users to login to sites like Facebook and Myspace. Be careful as some proxy softwares don’t allow login functions. There’s nothing more off-putting to a user and damaging to a proxy then people finding out they can’t log in to the sites they are trying to visit!
Thirdly, add PTC ads on the site. From experience I’ve found affiliate program ads to be very ineffective on proxies. Firstly, because half of the sites like amazon are normally blocked anyway so people can’t follow through the link. Secondly, because people don’t want to be caught browsing so they aren’t really looking for something to buy. If they want to buy something, they’ll go through the proxy, not click your ads.
Make sure your ads blend in to the site and that the site is not ‘in your face’. Making it look as professional as possible will make people think it is run by a professional and not someone who wants to steal their personal data.
Fourth, make sure you advertise your site on lots of forums. Forums are by far the easiest and fastest way to get a proxy recognized. This is because proxies are generally known through word of mouth (either via IM or in the school/workplace). Kids especially often talk to each other about how to get to their favourite sites in their ICT lessons and this spreads through a school like wildfire. I’ve seen it happen first hand!
Lastly, remember that the most effective proxies have a certain ‘shelf life’. I would say the shelf life of the average proxy is 3-6 months, so I’d recommend using 3 domains a year; one every 4 months. After 4 months, simply forward the old one to the new one. As soon as a site is labeled as a proxy, they can be banned quickly by a lot of places, so it’s always worth trying to stay one step ahead of the game. By changing domains regularly, it is the most effective way of keeping ahead of those trying to block the proxies. Remember to keep the domains for a full 2 years before letting them drop though. You should be bringing in more than enough money to cover the renewal costs many times over.
The beauty of earning through proxies is that you only need to put in about a month each year (making the site originally, but mostly casual forum advertising) and you can create a very successful site that earns well. 30 hours a year to earn a few hundred or even thousand bucks is very reasonable, in my eyes.

One popular method to make money online is with a Proxy site. We have just launched our first site and would like to share what we have learned so far, so that you can set your own site up if you want to.
I will also report further down the track with the success of this site and any additional lessons learned along the way.
If you decide you want to do your own site, feel free to ask me any questions, I am here to help and can give technical advice and/or assistance if necessary.
What is a proxy?
A proxy allows anyone anywhere to access sites that may otherwise be blocked. E.g at work you may be blocked from visiting facebook or myspace, however through a proxy you will be able to access them.
Why do you want a Proxy?
Proxies can become very viral and attract a huge amount of traffic in a short space of time, however they are not always looked upon as a long term solution because often they are blocked as soon as they are discovered by the schools, workplaces etc.
How much does it cost to set up a proxy?
Here are my set up costs.
Domain Name $7-15 (Godaddy with coupon code)
Custom Logo $5-00 (DP forums)
1st Month Hosting $4-00 (DP forums)
Total with 1 month hosting $16-15
And probably one hour of my time, which involved finding a template, uploading the files and a couple of minor customizations to setup AdSense and Logo etc.
