How does Google rank tweets?
A few months ago, both Microsoft and Google announced a deal with Twitter, through which they would get real-time access to tweets, in order to provide real-time results for their search engines. After waiting a while, Google started including real-time results into Google SERPs, not only for tweets, but also various other sources.
After that, Bing officials gave a tip about the ranking: if a user has a many followers, his tweets will be ranked higher. Instead, if a tweet is found to be duplicate, it will be ranked lower.
Google did not provide much information about the way their search engine will be ranking tweets and other real-time results. The only information provided by them came from Amit Singhal, a developer of the real-time search at Google, in an interview with MIT's Technology Review. He said that Google also considers the number of followers, but, as we all know, it’s not just about the quantity, it’s more about the quality. Meaning the followers should be reputable in order to rank your tweets higher.
You can say it’s kinda like the link building system. Getting links from good, reputable sources, helps your keyword optimization (you can read more about this on the Tips for good SEO and Link Exchange how-to articles I wrote) so having followers with some king of authority will help you have your tweets rank well in Google’s real-time search.
Another thing that influences the ranking, are the hashtags. Google doesn’t like hashtags too much, and they will consider tweets with hashtags to be of lower quality, as they say this is part of the spam control strategy.
Also, Google will scan tweets to find the “signal in the noise” that will help them provide the freshest subjects when searching.
There are also other factors that influences tweets ranking, but I doubt Google will make them public. For now, this is all we can tell about ranking tweets, and get to the conclusion that this strategy is probably the same for ranking content from other sources, for the real time search.
