Google launched a service that allows deforestation monitoring
Google launched a new service that allows scientists and ecological activists to use the Internet for monitoring the process of deforestation worldwide.
"We hope this technology will help stoping forest destruction" said Rebecca Moore and Amy Luers, Google.org representatives.
The new service allows scientists to analyze relevant data from images transmitted by satellites, in order to know the exact location of deforestation.
The system also allows immediate finding of forests that are about to be cut or burned.
This service will initially be tested by Google's partner organizations, and then will be available for free.
The launch of Google's new service comes in the context in which in Copenhagen is taking place the UN conference on environmental issues.

Currently the service is under testing, and is available only to certain organizations. I don't know if the free version will have some limitation, when it will be available for everyone.
