UK shoppers can now spend more on the internet from stores in non-EU countries before being charged duty.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said items bought online or through mail order will be charged customs duty if the value of the package is above £135.
Previously the threshold stood at £120, HMRC said.
Smokers can also now bring as many cigarettes as they like into the UK for their personal use from Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania and Estonia.
Travel limits
The changes, which came into effect on 1 January, also allow people to bring higher value items with them to the UK without paying customs duty or VAT.
Those arriving by commercial flights or sea travel from a non-EU country can bring in up to goods worth £390 for personal use without being charged. The previous limit was £340.
This does not include alcohol, tobacco or fuel which have their own limits that have not changed.
