SEO is about search engines, primarily the big 3, Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft , so SEO is basically targetted to search engines where as SMO is the networking aspect.
Social Media Optimization or SMO has been very popular these days in the SEO industry. It refers to the art of using social media networking sites to help boost up your website’s popularity.There has been a great increase in the popularity of social media websites in the past few years. Social media networking helps a great deal to increase traffic on your website.
SMO is about the "new" social media sources that have crept up, including blogs, bookmarking websites, media sharing websites etc...

I do Agree with Nevin, but in detail we can say that SEO & SMO are the part of Internet Marketing.

SMO: Social Media Optimization process refers to get traffic from Social Networks like facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc. which has emerged as one the best marketing practice to boost traffic instantly.
