How long does it take for SEO to take effect?

Months, years, decades? Who knows, it depends on what you do and how search engines perceive it.

It depends upon a lot of factors including site age, site back links etc. You may compete a site easily if its having low amount of back links , but if a site is having a high PR and lakhs of back links then what would you do. So it really depends upon different factors that how much time it would take to get on the top of search.

Personally, I will take getting resul withong one day with a large pinch of Salt, its almost as if Google has indexed your site even before it got online for you to have result withing a day.

well i think that totally depends upon the keyword i mean if you choose to be using the competitive keyword then it would definitely cause more than few days and if you choose to be using the average keywords then i m sure they must have scroll in also a few days i mean i have never faced the thing that my site got in the top ranking positions in just a minute of time .......
