Image Optimization and Bandwidth Consumption
We are definitely living in the hosting "overselling" age which basically means that most of the major hosting companies now offer "unlimited resources" which normally include bandwidth and disk space.
We all know that nothing is really unlimited so therefore once we start to consume a considerable amount of those resources, we should usually receive a warning under many potential excuses to just stop doing what we are doing.
Although internet connections are very fast these days, it is still not a bad idea to "optimize" your website completely including any images that it might have.
This is also a confirmed factor with the leading search engines such as Google. In other words, site speed does affect your rankings in a way.
By optimizing your code, images and all other technical aspects, you should not only increase your site's speed but also save a lot of bandwidth in the long run.
If you are a hosting re-seller with limited resources, you can imagine how a 5 MB image will use up 5 MBs of bandwidth every time a user loads it, instead of being optimized and using less than 50-100 KBs. It's a resource consumption disaster.
If your website is (or even not actually) image heavy, do you optimize them? How?Last edited by Alex; 07-19-2012 at 10:07 PM.

Don't use flash images and resize the images sizes, only these two I can come up to.

Using your CSS to manage your image data is better practice than fluffing about and getting mad at your html code, optimising the images across the board rather than playing around with them individually·

I would suggest running all sites through webpagetest.org, they give you comprehensive analysis of your site with proper site calculations (not just the size of your html like some). Really worth it. Optimisation isn't just about making sure your site stays within hosting allowances, it makes sure your users have an excellent experience on your site (at least where page speed is concerned).
