Default Step-by-step guide to using File Transfer Protocol

File Transfer Protocol (AKA FTP) Is one of the easiest ways of uploading files to a web server of some description, wether you want to upload a text file or 50GB of stuff, FTP is the best way to do it, but it can also be the most unsafest way to do as your computer can easily be keylogged and backdoored allowing protential hackers to log your username and password you are using to login to your FTP. To protect your self you need to use SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) More on that at a later time!

So FTP , Your new to webmastering and you want to upload something? Alright, Simple! So follow these steps:

    1) First of all you'll need a FTP client , i'd suggest FileZilla (http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client)

    2) Go ahead and install it and onced installed open it up!
TIP - unfamiliar with FileZilla? Look at this:

    3) Okay now we need to login!
Hostname - ftp.domain.tld - replace domain and tld with your domain and tld, For example ftp.allhostone.com (unless otherwise specified by your host)

    b) Username , Simply the username you use to login to your cpanel
    c) Password , Simple the password you use to login to your cpanel
    d) Port, Leave this blank (unless otherwise specified by your host)
    e) Hit that Quickconnect button
Tip - See that button with a little down arrow next to 'Quickconnect' Thats the history button, instead of everytime having to login just click that tab and chose your last login and it will automaticly login as it remembers your hostname, username and password

    4) You are now logged in and it should look abit like:
    http://images.webmasterserve.com/moo.../webserver.jpg

    5) Now to upload files its SIMPLE!! find the files you want to upload on the left (local server) and then select and drag them into the box on the right
Tip - drag them into the directory you want them to be in, so go to the directory you want the files in first

Once you have fragged it in it should automaticly start uploading!

    6) Once it has uploaded go and check its uploaded successfully!

Well done thats the basic how to use a FTP. More coming soon!
