    Question Bounce Rate Problem

    Hello Friends,

I am John Conner (yeah...that's my real name- terminator released after I was born :) ) and work as webmaster. I have certain queries regarding the google analytic's bounce rate. I know of a B2B site operating in high value-low volume revenue model. The bounce rate has been hovering at around 70-75% (whereas the industrial benchmark is around 45%) for their internet site. Now, I have following questions to ask:

    1. How exactly is the industrial benchmarks calculated (and their graph plotted)? Are the bounce rates of major firms operating in the same sector also into account while calculating the bounce rate? So, does that mean that competing firms have a bounce rate lower than that of the site in question (with BR of 75%)?

    2. When analytics show that the bounce rate is 75%, does this figure an average of the bounce rates of all the pages of the website?

    3. Do we deal with the problem of high bounce rate on a site-wide basis or page-to-page basis?

Would appreciate any help on this matter.

    Hello John,
    welcome to webmaster serve.

    1. You sort of answer the first question yourself, the benchmark for calculating industrial average for bounce rate for any particular industry will be based on a sample of bounce rates recorded by other sites in that same industry to work out what the average is across that industry.

    2. Yes, the bounce rate giving for a particular site is based on all pages from the site (assuming you installed analytics code site wide)

    3. To deal with high bounce rate, you need to find which of your pages loses the most customer and review it (you can use Google Optimiser to determine which version of a page converts better) and then put the revised version online, monitor it to see if your bounce rate reduces.

    Good luck
