Change the default admin username in wordpress
I don't know how many of you know, but letting your main account named "admin" it's a problem, from the security point of view. The hackers can launch a brute force attack on the username: admin that can guess your admin password and take advantage of your blog.
In order to avoid such problems, one solution will be to rename the default username: admin.
Here are the steps that need to be follow:
1. Back up your database first.
2. Use phpadmin to access your database
3. Select the table labeled WP-User and click the browse icon. This will bring up all the records listed in that table.
4. Select the record labelled Admin and click edit. The edit button looks like a little pencil.
5. Go to the field labelled user-login and change the name there to the one you want.
6. Save the changes.
7. Go to your login page and verify the changes by logging in.
Quite easy, isn't it?
In case you need guidance or more help please let me know.

This is why I'm a massive fan of wordpress. It's so configurable and mangeable. Like an etchasketch, you can wipe the slate clean and start again if you mess things up! (making sure you have backed up the tables of course first!)
Thanks for this, I've not actually used this technique for security yet but quite rightly so, its there to be brute forced so is a good idea to change it. Great post. Thanks.

Something else to be aware of, is that if you use Fantastico to install Wordpress, you will have the option to set both the admin account username, and the nickname that will be displayed when posting. Make sure that you set a hard to guess username and password.
