Web directories essentially serve as a catalog of links sorted by relevant topics. In the earlier days, when search engines weren't as popular, directories served as the main method of finding relevant sites. But nowadays, search engines like Google and Yahoo have taken over and serve as the main medium that connects users with what they're looking for.

Submitting your site to directories has the following benefits:-
To get your website indexed -Search engines like Google and Yahoo send out crawlers (spiders) to search the web for new sites that come up everyday. If you have a new site and you want search engines to know of its existence, then there couldn't be an easier and better way to let a search engine know than having it find your site through links in various directories.

Build One way links and see an improvement in Search Engine Rankings -Most directories provide one way links, which is beneficial from the SEO aspect of your site. Search engines give importance to the number of inbound links to your site when ranking it for a given position during search and one way links are thought to be valued more than reciprocal links (links exchanged with other sites). Thus, directory links can help give a boost to your SEO efforts.

Targeting specific keywords / phrases
- Most directories allow you to provide a link with keywords describing your site. It's not easy getting links to your site with the keywords you want and directories serve as the easiest medium for getting such links. Getting links with targeted keywords / phrases can have search engines favoring your site over others when ranking for the given terms.

I have seen people massively submitting there sites to Web Directories daily? I wonder why so intense submission to directories which have just born. They rarely have a PR0 and still? I don't find a point submitting to directories like that and wasting my time, I would prefer indeed subscription on 10 PR4-PR6 Web Directories which will really contribute me a PR? What are your views regarding this?
Directory submissions are also a part of SEO campaign moreover it is the first step for conducting an SEO campaign, Submitting sites to various directories increases the chances of getting more backlinks. Though, you may ignore 0 PR directory sites and submit site to directories having good PR, It is one of the traditionally followed methods to get backlinks to the site.
Moreover, Let me say this earlier Directory submission was considered as the major source to get backlinks pointing to your site.

The obvious ones are:
– Great web directory that every site and blog owner who is serious about his business should be listed in. They guarantee your site will be reviewed by an editor in timely manner (unlike DMoz)
– Once used to be a great directory and getting listed there still helps but good luck getting reviewed and actually accepted. Just submit your site once and forget about their existence.
– Worth every penny and Google crawls their pages all the time. Yahoo directory will also pass some page rank. I have listed a new site there without any other links and got Page Rank 3 on the first update.
– Well, if you can get them to give you a dofollow link them it's worth it, otherwise don't bother. I don't understand why they changed to nofollow (makes no sense). It's like saying, "Yes, your site is good quality but we will use nofollow cause we still don't trust you)

A lot of deep links in the directory aren't even indexed by google. Now, if you're talking about DMOZ or the Yahoo Directory, then yes those are worth it :)
