Locking are used to keeps the database in the consistent state. Means it prevent the data base from filling and retrieving the incorrect value by the process. Because database contain large amount of data and that data is accessed by the more then one customer at the same time . So there is a chance of error in reading and writing the data to or from data base.

Locks are applied on the shared data item to prevent them from inconsistency. Suppose two user want to access a same file for read and write the file simultaneously.Let first user start the reading and at same time second user also update the data, in this situation first user get the different data during the reading it is known as inconstancy. To prevent inconsistency locks are applied on the file before allocate it to user.
