Microsoft is trying to patent emoticons

Smileys, emoticons or those funy faces in the e-mails or chat messages are the property of each program used for transmiting the content ... or so we thought until now. But Microsoft thought that they did not take over enough utiliyation rights, and emoticons seems a profitable idea, which has to be made their own property.

From January last year, Microsoft deposited a patent request for creation of personalized emoticons which we use in our online conversations.

The patent refers to the function of appointing a series of specific characters and the correct display of these at the addressee. Obvious, the initiative dislike every freeware and open source developer and the aprobation of such a patent would inflict serious problems to the working of some concurent services like ICQ, AOL and Yahoo Messenger.

The patent was not activated yet, but was made public last week by the American Patent Office.
