Apologies if this is too basic, but my sister has asked me how she can be sure she has really erased files. I know that often people think they have 'cleaned' a disk and then find others can access all their data, and that some functions, such as delete file, just messes the index so it cannot be seen there etc.,

Is there a simple function she can use to be sure all her bank account details don't end up with the charity she wishes to give the computer to?

Thanks

you can also use the ultimate boot disk which is free from

www.ultimatebootcd.com

there are disk scrubbers there including a 6 pass scrub which is classed as an MoD scub (funny name)

Scrubbers REALLY work your hard drive with so many consecutive writes to the platter.

Personally i wouldnt worry too much about it. You have to really go out of your way to retrieve the data (Easy recovery pro is good). but its fun to investigate :)

Peace
