Designing a website needs various things to be taken into consideration. Among them using the right colors is very important. While designing a website, you have 16.8 million colors to choose from. It is needless to say that the job is not as simple as it seems. Apart from single colors, you can also combine various shades to create an individual palette. As a result, color choices become kind of infinite. Many designers might not know, but every color has meaning attached to it. Before using the color, understand what it implies and then apply it practically.

Here are some vital guidelines, which can be used by web designers:
    • Work on contrast – It is recommended to use contrast shades in website design. If the background is of dark shade, the text should be in lighter colors. White background and any dark color shade for the text is good and vice versa.
    • Limit the choice of colors – Innumerable web designers have opined in unison that color choices should be limited in a web design. Fewer the color shades, better it is for the entire design. It is true that colors are persuasive, but a riot of the same is not acceptable in a web design.
    • Remain web safe – Rendering of colors vary in PCs as well as in Mac. Interestingly, colors also appear different in different browsers. Minimize the issues with use of ‘web smart’ colors and shades. It is recommended to use colors that look the same on all computers and browsers.
    • Use of shadows and gradients – If you are thinking of redesigning a website without putting in more efforts, use gradients and shadows in the right places. For instance, add some nice gradients or work on some nice shadow right below the logo. This adds loads of depth to the site.
    • Uniform color for highlighting – While creating a web design, there are certain topics or headings, which need highlighting. And for this, it is recommended to use a uniform color. In many websites, you might find that the color of highlighting is different for different headings. This makes the site look cumbersome with use of plethora of colors. However, you can try some interesting variations with the highlighting color.
    • Add vibrancy without overdoing things – A dull and drab looking website will definitely not be able to attract your attention. With presence of bright colors on the website, the user has an energetic feel. If you are looking to market a product through the web design, add some vibrancy in the web design. But the vibrant color should be used in pivotal places so that the viewer can concentrate on the right things at the right time.
    • Creating additional white space – By adding more white space, the eyes will be guided to the key areas on the site. If the main landing page is in a subtle light shade, use the call to action tabs like ‘Buy Now’, ‘Add to Cart’, ‘Call Now’ etc buttons in contrasting, bright and bold colors. This is sure to increase conversion rates than in pages which have splash of colors.

Thank you for posting this, it's really basic 101 stuff that every designer needs to learn, not only web designers. Color theory is EXTREMELY important in the art world, cinematography world, you name it. It's essentially universal and is important to relay your site's or content's "feel" of sorts.

I am not a designer or an artist, however, I understand the importance of color in branding business or product. If done properly, color you have chosen for your product or business can be an identity of your product or business. Color is also very important in website building. Light an bright colors are visually appealing. It the website uses dark color, it is really difficult to navigate the website.

Taking color schemes that suits your website most among visitors attracts them and holds them to get in deep. If color are too dull or too bright, one may not prefer to the website as dull shows the lack of confidence and too bright color acts too loud to customers. Choosing color that may holds your customers should also given preference equally.
