Google’s Two distinct things in SEO

Crawling and indexing are two distinct things and this is commonly misunderstood in the SEO industry. Crawling means that Googlebot looks at all the content/code on the page and analyzes it. Indexing means that the page is eligible to show up in Google's search results. They aren't mutually inclusive.

    Crawling

Crawling or web crawling refers to an automated process through which search engines filtrate web pages for proper indexing.

Web crawlers go through web pages, look for relevant keywords, hyperlinks and content, and bring information back to the web servers for indexing.

As crawlers like Google Bots also go through other linked pages on websites, companies build sitemaps for better accessibility and navigation.

Crawling in SEO is the acquisition of data about a website.

Crawling is a process by which search engines crawler/ spiders/bots scan a website and collect details about each page: titles, images, keywords, other linked pages, etc. It also discovers updated content on the web, such as new sites or pages, changes to existing sites, and dead links.

    According to Google

“The crawling process begins with a list of web addresses from past crawls and sitemaps provided by website owners. As our crawlers visit these websites, they use links on those sites to discover other pages.”

    Indexing

Indexing starts when the crawling process gets over during a search. Google uses crawling to collect pages relevant to the search queries, and creates index that includes specific words, or search terms and their locations.

Search engines answer queries of the users by looking up to the index and showing the most appropriate pages. In layman's terms, indexing is the process of adding web pages into Google search. Depending upon which meta tag you used (index or NO-index), Google will crawl and index your pages. A no-indextag means that that page will not be added to the web search's index

Spiders are also called as Crawlers or Google Bots. Spiders are used to crawl a website to index them in the search engines data base for a Quicker Access. Spiders are visits every website and crawls the data.

Googlebot is Google's web crawling bot (sometimes also called a "spider"). Crawling is the process by which Googlebot discovers new and updated pages to be added to the Google index. We use a huge set of computers to fetch (or "crawl") billions of pages on the web.

In the very simplest of definitions, cache is a snapshot of a web page that Google creates and stores after they have indexed a page. When pages are indexed, they are categorized and filed within Google's indexers, but they do not actively search though millions of web pages every time that page is called up.

Crawling is the process or reading through your webpage source by search engine spiders. They provide a cache certificate after a successful crawl. Indexing is updating the cached webpages in search engine database. Indexed webpages are now ready for search engine rankings.

A crawler is a program used by search engines to collect data from the internet. When a crawler visits a website, it picks over the entire website's content and stores it in a databank. It also stores all the external and internal links to the website.
    OR
A crawler is a program that visits Web sites and reads their pages and other information in order to create entries for a search engine index. The major search engines on the Web all have such a program, which is also known as a "spider" or a "bot."
Google Crawling and Indexing are the two terms upon which the entire web world depends.
    • When Google visits your website for tracking purposes. This process is done by Google’s Spider crawler.
    • After crawling has been done, the results get put onto Google’s index (i.e. web search).
Crawling basically means following a path.
In the SEO world, crawling means following your links and “crawling” around your website. When bots come to your website (any page), they follow other linked pages also on your website.
This is one reason why we create site maps, as they contain all of the links in our blog and Google’s bots can use them to look deeply into a website.
    • The way we stop crawling certain parts of our site is by using the Robots.txt file.

Indexing is the process of search engines crawling your web pages and storing them (indexing) in a database. If your website is not indexed, then it won’t show up in search engine results.
Search engines regularly update their indexes by crawling the web repeatedly. To get started, you should create a Sitemap of all your pages. If you don’t want to have some pages indexed, simply add a noindex tag to your pages in the <head> section, like this:
    <META NAME="robots" CONTENT="noindex">

Both content and backlinks are important. Content is more important for larger websites with a lot of content - media, user-generated content, eCommerce (makes sense) while backlinks are more important for smaller websites with less content, the typical small service company websites, for example for cleaning services.
