Crawling or web crawling refers to an automated process through which search engines filtrate web pages for proper indexing.
Web crawlers go through web pages, look for relevant keywords, hyperlinks and content, and bring information back to the web servers for indexing.
As crawlers like Google Bots also go through other linked pages on websites, companies build sitemaps for better accessibility and navigation.

Crawling means following your links and “crawling” around your website. they will trace all the valid links on those pages. When bots come to your website they follow other linked pages also on your website.

Crawling is the process performed by search engine crawler, when searching for relevant websites on the index. For instance,Google is constantly sending out "spiders" or "bots" which is a search engine's automatic navigator to discover which websites contain the most relevant information related to certain keywords.

Crawling means, move forward on the hands and knees or by dragging the body close to the ground.A Web crawler, sometimes called a spider, is an Internet bot which systematically browses the World Wide Web, typically for the purpose of Web Indexing (web spidering).
Web search engines and some other sites use Web crawling or spidering software to update their web content or indices of others sites' web content. Web crawlers can copy all the pages they visit for later processing by a search engine which indexes the downloaded pages so the users can search much more efficiently.
Crawlers consume resources on the systems they visit and often visit sites without tacit approval. Issues of schedule, load, and "politeness" come into play when large collections of pages are accessed. Mechanisms exist for public sites not wishing to be crawled to make this known to the crawling agent. For instance, including a robot.txt file can request bots to index only parts of a website, or nothing at all.

Crawling is the process of fetching all the webpages which is linked to a site. Indexing and Crawling is different. Indexing is storing all the fetched webpages into a database.

For instance,Google is constantly sending out "spiders" or "bots" which is a search engine's automatic navigator to discover which websites contain the most relevant information related to certain keywords.
So there are basically three steps that are involved in the web crawling procedure.
First the search bot starts by crawling the pages of your site.
Second it continues indexing the words and content of the site.
Third it visit the links (web page addresses or URLs) that are found in your site.
When the spider doesn’t find a page, it will eventually be deleted from the index. However, some of the spiders will check again for a second time to verify that the page really is offline.
The first thing a spider is supposed to do when it visits your website is look for a file called “robots.txt”. This file contains instructions for the spider on which parts of the website to index, and which parts to ignore. The only way to control what a spider sees on your site is by using a robots.txt file. All spiders are supposed to follow some rules, and the major search engines do follow these rules for the most part. Fortunately, the major search engines like Google or Bing are finally working together on standards.

Hi,

We use software known as “web crawlers” to discover publicly available webpages. The most well-known crawler is called “Googlebot.” Crawlers look at webpages and follow links on those pages, much like you would if you were browsing content on the web. They go from link to link and bring data about those webpages back to Google’s servers. The crawl process begins with a list of web addresses from past crawls and sitemaps provided by website owners. As our crawlers visit these websites, they look for links for other pages to visit. The software pays special attention to new sites, changes to existing sites and dead links.

In the SEO world, crawling means following your links and “crawling” around your website. When bots come to your website (any page), they follow other linked pages also on your website.

This is one reason why we create site maps, as they contain all of the links in our blog and Google’s bots can use them to look deeply into a website.
