How do they keep it running? Or is it just a large group of people who are volunteering to work on Linux?

Free

There are paid for services like the support. Large companies prefer "proper" support than forums.

Most recieve funding from external companies like IBM.

RedHat is not free and is used by servers mainly. The support in RedHat is MASSIVE due to this money

Most of the projects are freelance groups but if they take off the distro's usually donate a smal amount of cash. The groups also gladly accept personal donations from users.

Yep, and after all Linux is licensed under the GPL license, which makes it opensource to anyone.

Whether you want to make people pay for your distro is up to you, but most people prefer to support the general public in this case and accept donations as their main funding, which turns out to be a large success for most people.
